Authority Is Not Influence
Many leaders assume that one of the automatic perks that comes with their position is influence. They mistakenly believe that direct reports and peers will automatically begin seeking our their input and valuing their contribution to the organization. They believe that in their new role, people will automatically listen to them and take heed of their perspectives.
They quickly learn that this is not the case. It’s not an easy lesson sometimes.
Authority is not leadership or influence. These are distinctly different things. You can have authority without being a leader. Likewise, you can have great influence without having authority.
